It will explore the nature of the Bible through a study of its historical formation and examine questions of translation, literary types and world-views. The unit will also introduce standard methods of interpretation by making particular studies of set texts. It will equip the student to apply Biblical insights and concepts to issues in church and society. Tuesday evenings 12th January - 23rd March 2010 with mid - term break 16th February FT011 The Church This unit will give a general introduction to the history and theology of the Christian Church. Recent developments in ecumenism will be explored alongside an introduction to the history of denominationalism. Scriptural and theological models of the Church will be studied and compared with personal experience. Weekends of 18th – 20th September & 30th October – 1st November 2009 FT012 Church and Society This unit will explore a range of understandings and experiences of the contemporary world. It will introduce some approaches that challenge traditional understandings of the Church’s life and mission. Five days during the period 9th -16th April 2010 (dates to be confirmed) FR011 Introduction to Theology This unit will provide the groundwork in theology necessary to understand and develop the essential skills of theological reflection. It will explore the nature of religious language and the sources of theology in scripture, tradition, reason and experience. It will outline the basic categories of theology and the work of several major theologians. Tuesday evenings 22nd September 2009 – 1st December 2009 with mid-term break 27th October FE011 Models of Ministry This unit will explore a range of models of the ministry of the whole people of God and explore the scriptural, historical and theological basis for them. The student will have the opportunity to develop skills of critical reflection and assessment in relation to their own particular ministry in church and/or society. Tuesday evenings 20th April – 30th June 2010 with mid - term break 25th May FE012 Worship and Spirituality This unit will provide a general introduction to the nature of worship and its relation to personal and corporate spirituality. It will explore the historical development, context, theology and structure of the worship. The unit will examine the ways in which theological, biblical and ecumenical insights can be combined with contemporary experience to create worship for a variety of contexts. Weekends of 8th – 10th January & 19th – 21st February 2010 level 2 FS021 Texts and Contexts This unit will explore the practice and purpose of Biblical interpretation through the use of guidelines and case studies. It will consider the relationship between the Bible and other scriptures such as the Torah and the Koran. The unit includes work on selected passages from the New Testament that are illustrative of the issues and methods of scriptural interpretation and authority. Weekends of 18th – 20th September & 30th October – 1st November 2009 FS022 Communicating the Gospel This unit will develop an integrated approach to the formal study and devotional use of Scripture. The opportunities and difficulties of preaching and proclamation in an I.T. / Media rich society and the issues of congregational Biblical literacy, secular interpretation, and congregational understanding will be explored. The unit will include work on new forms of communication, the use of technology and the effectiveness of advertising in the church. Five days during the period 9th -16th April 2010 (dates to be confirmed) FT021 Mission and Evangelism This unit will provide the theoretical background to the practice of mission and evangelism as well as providing an opportunity to engage in theological reflection on practical experience. Different models of mission and evangelism in the history of the Church and currently popular in the U.K. context will also be explored. Tuesday evenings 20th April – 30th June 2010 with mid - term break 25th May FR021 Christian Understandings of God This unit will examine some of the different ways in which the Christian tradition has considered the nature of God. Particular attention will be paid to the understanding of a God as Trinity and how that impacts upon some of the classic theological questions and the understanding of the Church’s life and mission. Tuesday evenings 12th January - 23rd March 2010 with mid -term break 16th February FR022 Introduction to Ethics This unit will introduce ethical theory and moral philosophy and their importance for Christian life and mission. It will explore some of the basic concepts and issues in ethics. These will be applied in a study of two ethical dilemmas - abortion and euthanasia - thus equipping the student to explore other ethical questions. Tuesday evenings 22nd September 2009 – 1st December 2009 with mid-term break 27th October FE021 Rites of Passage This unit will develop the understanding of the relationship between Christian life and worship by integrating doctrinal and denominational approaches to baptism, confirmation, communion, marriage, and funerals with practical discussion and demonstrations of these and other rites.
