Historical & Theological Studies in Wesley Heritage

Wesley College is the largest regional provider of theological education for the Methodist church in Gt. Britain. The College, established over a century ago, provides Foundation and Ministerial Training for Methodist Presbyters and Deacons, as well as for a variety of lay ministers.

In particular, as one of the very few centres in the World, which provides opportunities for the study of Wesley Heritage in its historical context, and with unique access to original and secondary Wesley material in its library, Wesley College offers an international programme from 2005 - “Historical & Theological Studies in Wesley Heritage.”

This program is a special research program for Wesley’s heritage for one year duration which is divided into two sections, the “Teaching Program” and the “Research Program.” The “Teaching Program” takes place in a two week intensive block during the summer holiday which provides a wide range of units including History and Theology in the Methodist Tradition, Wesley’s Theology, Ministry, Spirituality, Leadership, Preaching, pastoral care, Worship and Ethics, relating these to Wesley Heritage. In addition, this Course offers a tour programme visiting important Wesley sites in order to set the teaching in a “lived” context. Each tour will include a guide to explain the historical significance of each place. The College introduces students to Methodist history and heritage, enabling them to apply Wesley Studies to their own situation and role in the ministry and mission of the Christian church throughout the world.

The “Research Program” is research duration for two essays which should be academic and practical research. To gain the award, students are required to write them within the course of the year. Essay should normally be written by English, but it can be written in the student’s own language (if agreed with the course tutor or representer of program). Students can be supervised by course tutors for their high marked essays during the “Research Program.”

In order to enable students to quality for the award, the College offers lectures during the residential two-week period in Bristol by a range of specialist scholars and visiting tutors who bring both specialization and work experience to their areas of teaching.

죠나단 박사 (웨슬리 대학 학장)

영국 브리스톨 웨슬리 신학 대학은 존 웨슬리 목사님의 감리회 운동의 시작점이라고 할 수 있는 영국의 서 남부지방에 위치하고 있는 브리스톨 지역에 있습니다. 본 대학은 약 150여 년 전에 영국 감리교의 성직자 양성의 목적으로 세워졌으며, 지금도 영국 감리교의 가장 큰 교단 신학 대학으로서 세계적인 명성을 갖고 있습니다.

특별히 웨슬리 목사님의 유산에 관한 유일한 원본들과 (현 웨슬리 대학 도서관에는 웨슬리 목사님의 일기, 편지, 준회원 목사 안수증, 정회원 목사 안수증, 최초의 설교집, 사무엘 웨슬리의 대학 석사 논문, 수잔나 웨슬리의 편지들과 사도신경 주석 등 다양한 원본들이 소장되어 있음) 방대한 역사적인 사본의 책들을 다양하게 소유하고 있는 웨슬리 신학 대학은, 새로운 과정으로 웨슬리 목사님의 유산에 대한 전문 연구 과정으로 “웨슬리 역사, 신학 전문 연구과정”을 개설 했습니다.

이 프로그램은 1년 풀 타임 과정으로 “교육 프로그램 과정”과 “연구 프로그램 과정”으로 나누어져 있습니다.

교육 프로그램 과정으로는 2주 동안 여름 방학 기간을 이용하여 웨슬리 전문가들에 의하여 “웨슬리 목사님의 정통 감리교 신학, 목회학, 영성학, 설교학, 예배학, 윤리학” 등 다양한 주제 강의나 세미나를 이론적으로 배우게 되며, 또 실천 신학적 프로그램으로 영국에서 만이 할 수 있는 웨슬리 성지 방문 투어 프로그램을 개설함으로써 살아 있는 현장 교육을 하게 됩니다. 특히, 모든 성지에서도 웨슬리 목사님의 유산에 대하여 소개할 전문 교수와 가이드의 교육이 있게 됩니다.

연구 프로그램 과정으로는 “교육 프로 그램 과정” 이후에 에세이 2부를 정해진 기간 동안 연구하여 제출하는 과정입니다. 에세이는 하나는 아카데믹한 신학적인 입장에서 또 다른 하나는 실천신학적이고 응용신학적인 입장에서 연구된 에세이를 요구하고 있습니다. 기본적으로 에세이는 영어로 제출 해야 하는데, 만약 연구생들이 자국어로 제출하길 원한다면, 담당 교수나 또는 프로그램 원장의 허락 하에서 자국어로도 제출 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 “연구 프로그램 과정” 동안 연구생들의 수준 높은 에세이 위하여 담당 수퍼바이져 교수의 특별 지도를 받을 수 있습니다.

Module 1 (30 credits)

The First Module (C 1) includes lectures in Theology, Ministry, Spirituality, Leadership, Preaching, Worship and Ethics in Wesleyan Heritage. The subjects are:

• Wesley’s life:Childhood, Oxford time, Georgia Mission and Aldersgate Experience.
• Wesley’s life from Bristol Methodist to his Death.
• Wesley’s Organization for Society, Class, Band and its duties.
• Early Methodist rites for Sacraments, Baptism, Infant baptism.
• Wesley’s spirituality and its means.
• John Wesley and Charles Wesley’s Hymns for worship.
• Wesley’s charismatic leadership and collaboration ministry.
• Historical Background of Wesley’s Theology.
• Wesley’s theology for Prevenient Grace and its relation to natural theology.
• Wesley’s theology for Justification and conversion.
• Wesley’s theology for Christian perfection and Social Holiness.
• Wesley’s theology relative to the Ecumenism Movement and inter-faith dialogue.
• Development and transformation of Wesley’s theology in America
• Methodism in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Module 2 (30 credits)

The Second Module (C 2) includes tours to important Methodist sites for living education. Each tour will be accompanied by knowledgeable guides to provide on the spot information and teaching. The tours are to:

• Epworth area : Epworth Rectory, Samuel Wesley Tomb, Wroot church, Lincolnshire etc.
• Oxford area : Holy Club in Lincoln College, Christ Church, etc.
• London area : Wesley Tomb, Wesley’s Chapel, Aldersgate Street etc.
• Bristol area : Worship in New Room in Bristol, Charles Wesley’s House, Kingswood etc
• Cornwall area : Gwennap, Plymouth (Puritan)

두 번째 과목은 실천 신학과정으로서 웨슬리 목사님을 연구하는데 있어서 중요한 성지를 방문 탐방하는 살아있는 교육 과정입니다. 모든 방문 지마다 현장교육을 위한 전문 가디언들의 친절한 안내와 설명이 아래와 같이 준비되어 있습니다.

• 엡워스 지역 : 웹워스 목사관, 사무엘 웨슬리 목사님 무덤, 루트 교회 방문, 링콘셔 방문 등…
• 옥스퍼드 지역 : 린콘 대학의 신성 클럽, 웨슬리 목사님께서 공부하시고 목사 안수 받으신 크라스트 쳐치 대학 등…
• 런던 지역 : 웨슬리 목사님의 무덤, 웨슬리 채플, 올더스게이트, 그리고 런던의 다양한 유적지 관광 등…

Time Table for the Research Program

연구 프로그램 과정의 시간표

This Program is designed for two essays, the research for which should be academic and practical. The academic essay should be 2,000-2,5000 words written in English or the student's own language. The essay should relate to subjects covered in Module 1. However if students wish to write on other subjects, they can do by agreement with the course tutor.

The practical essay should be 2,500-3,500 words written in English or in the student’s own language. The essay for this unit will require the student to apply the implications of Wesley’s ministry and spirituality to their own place and role in the ministry and mission of the Christian church throughout the world. Before students submit final essays, they can submit a draft first which will be commented or supervised on by the tutor. Students should keep the deadline for the essay and need to attain a minimum of 40% for a pass.

본 과정은 에세이 연구 프로그램 과정으로서 이 기간 동안 2개의 연구 에세이를 제출해야 하는데, 하나는 아카데미컬한 에세이로서 2,000자에서 2,500자 분량으로 모델 1 의 주제와 관련되어야 합니다. 주제를 바꿀 수 있으나 바꿀 시는 반드시 담당 교수의 허락이 있어야 합니다.

둘째는 실천 신학적인 에세이로서 2,500자에서 3,500자 분량으로 모델 2와 관련하여 웨슬리의 삶과 정신이 연구생들의 목회와 또는 세계 선교의 현장에 응용이 되어야 합니다.

에세이들은 기본적으로 영어로 쓰는 것을 원칙으로 하나 연구생의 자국어로도 쓸 수 있으며 에세이의 통과 점수는 최소한 40점입니다. 연구생은 이 기간 동안 예비 에세이을 제출하여 슈퍼바이져의 지도를 받을 수 있습니다.

본 연구생들에게 주어지는 혜택

• Wesley Heritage students are regarded as Wesley College’s own students during the course.
• A letter to this effect can be obtained as a student from the College for the purposes of visa application or any identification.
• On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a Certificate of “Historical & Theological Studies in Wesley Heritage” validated by Wesley College.
• For students who successfully achieve the Certificate in Wesley Heritage with marks of 60% or above in their essay written in English and wish to undertake further studies, the College can offer awards at Diploma, BA or MA level which are validated by the University of Bristol, they can be accepted by interview only, without further IELTS or equivalent tests.

• 본 과정을 등록한 연구생들은 웨슬리 신학 대학의 정식 학생으로서 인정이 되어 됩니다.
• 비자 발급이나 또는 다른 신분을 확인 할 목적으로 학생 증명 서류가 필요할 때에는 웨슬리 대학 학생으로서 학생 증명서류를 발급 받을 수 있습니다.
• 본 과정을 성공리에 이수한 연구생들은 웨슬리 신학대학에서 인가된 “Historical & Theological Studies in Wesley Heritage” 학위 증서를 받을 수 있습니다.
• 본 과정을 성공리에 이수하고, 영어로 쓴 에세이 중 한 개라도 60 이상의 점수를 받은 연구생에게는 자신이 원한다면 영어 IELTS 점수나 또 다른 시험이 없이 면접을 통해서 브리스톨 대학의 학위 증서가 주어지는 디폴로마 (Diploma), 학사 (BA) 또는 석사 (MA) 학위 과정에 입학 할 수 있습니다.
• 영어를 잘 모르는 분들을 위해서 모든 영어 강의시간에는 한국어 동시 통역이 이루어 지고, 에세이도 한국어로도 쓸 수 있기에 수업을 진행하는데 어려움이 없습니다.

저를 깨웠던 웨슬리 목사님의 말씀

저는 영국에서 10여 년 동안 써리 대학에서 석사 과정으로 성서 해석학과 여성학을, 브리스톨 웨슬리 대학에서 석사과정으로 웨슬리 교회사와 교회 리더쉽을 그리고 웨일즈 대학에서 박사과정으로 웨슬리의 정통 조직신학을 공부했습니다. 그 중에서도 웨슬리 목사님을 접하게 된 것은 저의 가장 큰 행운이었습니다. 특히 웨슬리 목사님의 말씀을 읽으면서 제 마음 속 깊이 감명 받은 말씀은 당시 웨슬리 목사님께서 참된 감리교인에 대하여 소개하시면서 말씀하셨던 글입니다.

“나는 감리교인이라 하는 사람들이 유럽이나 미국 등에서 영원히 사라진다 하더라도 전혀 두려워하지 않습니다. 그러나 내가 진짜 두려워하는 것은 감리교회가 마치 죽어 버린 종파와 같이 신앙의 능력과는 관계 없이 신앙의 형식만 추구하는 (바리새인과 같은) 감리교인들로 존재할 까 봐 입니다. 만약 우리가 맨 처음 출발할 때에 가졌던 감리교의 신학, 감리교 정신, 그리고 감리교인의 경건의 훈련을 굳건히 붙잡지 않는다면 우리 모든 감리교인들은 생명 없는 죽은 종파로 전략 되어 버릴 수 있다는 것을 결코 잊어서는 안 된다는 것을 명심해야 합니다.”

저는 이 말씀을 읽으면서 웨슬리 신학과 정신 그리고 경건의 훈련을 제 개인적으로도 결코 잊어서는 안될 뿐 아니라 한국의 웨슬리안들에게도 정통 웨슬리 신학에 대하여 알려주고 싶은 마음이 간절했습니다. 특히 웨슬리 목사님의 신학과 정신은 감리교, 성결교, 나사렛 교회, 구세군 그리고 오순절 교단 등의 교회에게 직, 간접적인 신학적인 뿌리가 되기에 웨슬리 목사님의 유산을

Program Start Dates

웨슬리 역사, 신학 연구 프로그램 개강 날짜

This programme is of one year’s duration and runs from 12^th of August 2005 to 11^th of August 2006. (Every year, the term dates will be changeable.)

The intensive Study Program runs for two weeks from Friday 12^th of August to Tuesday 25^th August 2005. The Research programme for essays then runs from 26^th August 2005 to 29^th April 2006.

2005년도 웨슬리 역사, 신학 연구 과정은 총 1년 과정으로서 2005년 8월 12부터 2006년 8월 11까지 입니다. (매년 학사 날짜는 상황에 따라서 바꿔 질 수 있습니다).
